Waste and Recycling

mobile phones

Every year we distribute lots of new mobile phones to our customers. Anyone can recycle their unused mobiles and chargers in our shops, and wherever possible these mobiles are refurbished and re-used. We were able to refurbish and reuse 93% of the 586,478 mobiles we received in 2006, with the remainder being recycled.

Recycling mobile phones can have social as well as environmental benefits. In the UK, the average consumer replaces their mobile phone every 18 months and approximately 15 million mobile phones are replaced each year. Many of these phones can help improve communications in developing countries, especially in areas poorly served by fixed line networks. (Information from Fonebak, August 2007)

waste recycling

We aim to recycle or reuse waste in our network and offices where we can. Not only is it our responsibility, it's cost-effective for our business to reuse equipment in our network that represents a major expenditure. In recent years, we've been able to reuse or recycle nearly all such equipment. We also recycle all the general waste we can in all our offices and call centres, including paper, toner cartridges, disused computers, plastic cups and lights.

recycling broadband equipment

We recycle as much equipment as possible for reuse. At the end of a contract or if a customer has faulty equipment, we send out a prepaid returns bag for the return of the equipment (this is applicable to the Livebox, which in any case is on hire, USB modem, wireless router and TV equipment). All returned equipment is tested and refurbished or repaired for reuse, or if the unit is beyond economical repair, disposed of in accordance with Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) legislation.

There are also a large number of organisations throughout the UK who will collect your old computer equipment and prepare it where possible for reuse or recycling.
