stop spam text messages

what is spam?

Spam is an unwanted marketing message that can take the form of a text message that is sent to many people who have not requested to receive messages. Some people receive spam text messages and find these annoying. Spam messages affect all mobile operators, not just Orange. Some spam messages encourage you to call an expensive premium rate number (090 numbers), often to claim a prize.
An example of a spam text message:
'VIP Ticket: Congratulations U can claim 2 VIP row A2C Blu in Concert in November or Blu gift Guaranteed. Call 090XX XXXXXX to claim Ts&Cs www.xxxxxxxxxx.co.uk £3.75max'

what isn't spam?

Text messages which relate to a service you’ve subscribed to.
Orange Missed Call Alerts. This is a service that lets you know if you’ve missed a call. If someone tries to call you and your phone is off or not in coverage, and no Answer Phone message is left, Orange sends you a text message from Orange Answer Phone (123). This lets you know that you missed a call, and details the number and time of call.
Orange service updates and Orange marketing messages.

important information

1. Orange never has, and does not now, sell or provide customers’ numbers for marketing purposes to third parties.
2. Numbers can be randomly generated or lists of numbers are bought. The same text is then sent to thousands of numbers. Remember you have not been personally targeted.
3. You should be careful about where you provide your number. For example store card registrations, filling out forms etc.

what to do if you receive unwanted spam

Don’t reply to the spam message or call the number in the message as you may be charged a premium rate.
Contact the company directly if you no longer want to receive messages.
If unsubscribe details are not contained in the message, a search on the web or with directory enquiries will often give the contact information you require and you should contact the sender directly to be removed from their marketing list, the same as you would with unwanted mail.
If you are receiving text messages from a short code number for a service that you perhaps subscribed to and no longer wish to receive, try checking their instructions. Typically text the word 'STOP' to the service to deregister. If you do not have their details call Orange customer services who will be able to assist with contact details of the service provider.

how to avoid spam

Never sign up with websites that promise to remove your name from spam lists. Although these sites may be legitimate, sometimes they’re actually mobile phone number collectors.
Read terms and conditions on forms carefully before giving out your phone number.
You should tick or un-tick permission boxes when filling in online or paper forms to state you do not wish to receive marketing messages. Or, if done over phone let the person you are speaking to know your marketing preferences by mobile phone.
