Educate

One of the best ways to include and protect our customers is to teach them how to do it themselves. We´re delivering a number of initiatives to do just that.

Right now, they focus on helping people enjoy our products and services safely. We run a huge education programme for schools, parents, youth groups and teachers. We also give our employees paid time to go into schools and talk face-to-face with young people and parents, through our Orange Ambassadors scheme. A section of our website is also devoted entirely to phone and e-safety, to help our customers enjoy their mobiles and the internet in a safe way.

Orange Ambassadors

Our Orange Ambassador scheme is one of our proudest achievements. Our employees go on a one-day intensive course, so that they can go into schools to talk about e-safety.

It´s fun for our employees, fun for the kids and great for our brand. In 2009, more than 100 Orange Ambassadors visited just over 6,000 young people through class-based lessons and parents´ evenings. In the future, we want to extend our scheme beyond schools by working with our charity partners, to deliver the programme to vulnerable young people.

supporting schools

As well as sending our employees into schools, we´ve put together a ton of learning resources, including award-winning films that teachers can use to teach about topics like text bullying and online safety. They´re aimed at kids from 11 to 14. And over half of all UK secondary schools are already using them:

  • You, Your Phone & Staying Safe: a short film and activity pack about phone theft, used by 66% of UK secondary schools
  • Incoming Message: a 10-minute film and activities about text bullying, used in 71% of UK secondary schools
  • Safety Online: five short, award-winning films, activities and lesson plans around issues like safe social networking, posting personal details online and cyberbullying. Used by 65% of UK secondary schools

Copies of our education resources can be accessed by visiting our education website.

We´re also writing a new batch of leaflets on cyberbullying and social networking for our Ambassadors to hand out when they´re visiting schools and for parents and young people to pick up in our stores.

supporting parents

Lots of parents struggle to keep up with the technology their children are using. To help them, we´ve written a special guide called ‘What Parents Need to Know’, which includes helpful hints and tips on phone and online safety. It´s available in all Orange shops, and can be downloaded here.

The safety pages on our website are also full of helpful guides on everything from blocking adult content on mobile phones to understanding text-speak. There´s also a special film just for parents.
