smart and Orange are committed to safer driving

forthcoming changes to the law

On 1 December 2003 the law making it illegal to hold a mobile phone while driving came into effect. Offenders will be fined £30 initially - rising to a maximum of £1,000 if their case goes to court.

smart and Orange have been working together to create a special edition Orange smart city-coupé that uses the latest Bluetooth™ handsfree phone technology - a safer way of making and taking a call.

safer driving tips

1

belt up, be safe

Seatbelts save lives - use them.

2

don't get too near the rear

Keep a two second gap between you and the vehicle in front.

3

take 40 winks

Take a break - 15 minutes rest for every two hours of driving time.

4

don't drink alcohol at all if you're driving

Don't try to estimate how much drink will keep you below the legal limit - just don't drink alcohol at all.

5

slow down

At 35mph you are twice as likely to kill someone you hit as you are if you're travelling at 30mph.

6

look out, kids about

Be particularly alert when you're somewhere children are likely to be - near schools, buses and ice cream vans, for example.

7

read the road

Expect the unexpected. Use your mirrors frequently and think about what road users near you might do next.

8

put children in their place

Always ensure children are safely strapped in when travelling.
