According to the Orange Entreprenation report, individuals in the Midlands want to find that work/life balance with 53% citing “I want a more flexible lifestyle” as their motivation for wanting to set up their own business

East Midlands

Perhaps because of its manufacturing heritage, our FlexiTown research revealed that workers in the East Midlands are less likely than their counterparts in other regions to benefit from flexible working arrangements, with only 16% currently able to do so. Well, you can’t fix an aeroplane engine in your front room, can you!

And those living in the East Midlands appear to be a restless bunch. Respondents to our Connected Britain research stated that, given the choice by universal connectivity, many might opt to live elsewhere, meaning a potential population decrease of a whopping 70%.

As famous for being the UK’s manufacturing hub as it is for Robin Hood and Sherwood Forest, the East Midlands’ manufacturing industry in fact represents 23% of the region’s output. Its economic core is centred on the ‘Three Cities’ (Nottingham, Derby, Leicester and their surrounding areas) and almost half the population and 45% of the region’s businesses are in this area.

The region is often described as the forgotten heart of England and Nottingham has a long history at the centre of the UK’s garment industry. The cutting edge of style is still evident in Nottingham, in and around the Lace Market area. The Derbyshire Dales are considered an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, attracting over 1.5 million visitors every year and Leicester’s National Space Centre remains a popular choice for visitors dreaming of life beyond Earth.
