Liverpool

While it might be famous as one of the most musical cities in the UK (Liverpool artists have had more number one hits than any other UK town or city - 56 number ones to date in fact), Liverpool is also a very commercial and work-oriented city. Our Connected Britain research revealed that 35% of the people we questioned in Liverpool are prepared to travel up to an hour to get to work in the morning and 24% are currently able to work flexibly some or all of the time.

Encouragingly for local businesses, Liverpudlians are a loyal bunch. 30% of those we spoke to as part of our Connected Britain research would stay where they are, even if universal connectivity gave them the opportunity to move anywhere else in the UK.

Liverpool may be famous for its docks and shipbuilding industry but the city is also the most filmed-in British city outside London. And it’s not just the film industry that thrives here. The prosperous pharmaceuticals and biotechnology sector has attracted world-class companies, and the city’s range of creative industries now make a significant contribution to the local economy.

Liverpool is a major regional employment centre, with 13,200 businesses and some 226,000 jobs. Of these jobs, 87,000 are taken up by commuters from the Liverpool City region - an area of two million people, 70,000 businesses and one million jobs.
