Manchester

Our Connected Britain research found that job opportunities are currently a strong influence on Mancunians' choice of location. 48% of our survey respondents stated that job opportunities, rather than the local environment or proximity to friends and family, led them to settle in Manchester. Almost a quarter (23%) of city residents would opt to move to the countryside if universal connectivity gave them the choice. Working flexibly is a strong pull for employees so Manchester’s business leaders should be aware that only 7% of our respondents are currently able to work where they choose.

Manchester has transformed itself from an industrial city, dependent on manufacturing, to a thriving, knowledge-based economy. In fact, it’s the largest and fastest growing economy outside London and is considered the economic powerhouse of North West England. Since hosting the Commonwealth Games in 2002, the city has attracted around £2 billion of private sector investment, creating 45,000 jobs. Manchester is also the third-most visited city in the UK by foreign visitors and the most visited in England, outside London.

As well as its better known landmarks, Manchester also has a host of attractions for those who like to go off the beaten track. Science fans can go and see one of the world’s largest telescopes at Jodrell Bank, while Cornerhouse is the area’s international centre for contemporary visual arts and film. Those who like their food and drink can follow one of the area’s Ale Trails, and then consider the challenge of eating five puddings at the Market Restaurant. If a bit of fresh air’s in order after that, the beautiful Fletcher Moss Gardens could be just the spot.
