North West

The North West comprises five counties: Cumbria, Lancashire, Greater Manchester, Merseyside, and Cheshire. The area includes the Lake District and is, for those romantics out there, where Bill Clinton proposed to Hillary in 1973 on the banks of remote Ennerdale Water, the westernmost part of the area.

With such world-renowned counties and cities within its borders, it shouldn’t surprise you to hear that the economy is worth £106 billion, bigger than 14 EU countries. The region is home to the largest media hub outside of London, with over 31,000 digital and creative businesses employing 321,000 individuals, and is also home to the largest concentration of universities in the UK and boasts 50,000 graduates per year.

Perhaps surprisingly, being home to new industries like these, our previous FlexiTown research uncovered that only 21% of employees are currently able to work flexibly. It could be something to do with those graduates and residents under the age of 35, who appear to prefer a traditional office environment, according to our Connected Britain research.

And some of the residents could be up for a change of scene. If universal connectivity gave them the choice to live and work in the place of their choice, 9.5% said they’d opt to leave.
