94% of the UK’s rural population now shops online
19% of the UK’s population currently live in the countryside
According to Connected Britain 17% of city dwellers would prefer to live in the countrysideRural
Think about rural Britain and you might conjure up images of a sleepy place, where the pace of life is considerably slower than in the cities. That perception is increasingly at odds with the truth however. Rural parts of the country, such as Cornwall, have seen a considerable increase, both in population and in the number of business starting up, as better connectivity has opened remote spots up and made location much less important to business success.
Rural Britain has reinvented itself as a destination of choice. The population of the UK’s countryside is currently growing at a rate of 100,000 per year and the people who live there are now – on average – richer, more likely to be employed and better educated than their urban cousins.
Connectivity has played a major role in rejuvenating our countryside towns and villages. Entrepreneurs are increasingly choosing to locate their businesses outside of the major cities to reduce their operating costs and avoid the crush of the morning commute. And, as connectivity increases and becomes universal, we can expect to see these benefits becoming even more widespread right across
the UK.
