The strong economy of Southampton is promoting local redevelopment, and several major projects are proposed, including the city's first waterfront skyscrapers, which will stand 23 storeys tall and be surrounded by smaller office blocks and retail outlets. There are also plans for a 15-storey hotel at the city’s Ocean Village marina and a 21-storey hotel in the city centre, as part of a £100m development.
The city of Southampton is already home to some of the most famous businesses in the UK, including B&Q, HSBC and Ordnance Survey. In total, there are 7,700 businesses in the city, employing over 139,000 people and contributing over £2 billion to the national economy.
In future, universal connectivity should help Southampton continue to establish itself as a main centre on the South Coast of England, with more businesses able to operate in and around the city, increasing employment opportunities and opening up the doors to new flexible ways of working.
