Orange is the UK's most advanced digital mobile phone network. Since its launch in April 1994, Orange has become one of the strongest and most recognised brands in the UK. As of June 2000, Orange has over 7.2 million customers and a 23.4% share of the UK mobile market. At 13.2%, the company continues to have churn rates significantly lower than industry averages.
Orange took the first steps in implementing its international strategy in August 1997 when it participated in a consortium which won a new GSM1800 licence. Other licences were to follow in Belgium and Switzerland, along with brand licensing agreements with operators in Australia, Hong Kong, India and Israel. Following France Telecom's acquisition of Orange, the new enlarged company has mobile interests in 16 countries worldwide. Orange acts as a sponsor in the MCCM project and contributes to the definition of the operatorīs requirements.
