MMS Virus
Keep everyone in the picture, and make the most of your phone
Q: What is a mobile phone virus?
A: A virus is a piece of malicious software that can make a smart phone unusable. It can also send messages from your phone that you have not initiated but will still be charged for.
Q: How are they sent to me?
A: Currently they can be sent via MMS, Bluetooth or via connectivity to a PC. They can also be hidden in software you download to your device (this is called a Trojan)
Q: What damage will they do to my phone?
A: In the worst case they can make your phone unusable. Viruses have been known to erase personal data and send messages from your device.
Q: I don't have an MMS phone, can I still be affected?
A: Viruses only affect open operating system handsets which in most cases are MMS capable. However, if you do not have an MMS phone, and receive an MMS you will receive an SMS with a web link and password to view your MMS on our website. If this MMS contains a PC virus your PC may be affected when you open the MMS, so make sure that you know what the file contains before you open it.
Q: How can I minimise the risk of getting a virus?
A: Switch blue tooth off when it is not in use, or if your phone has the option, then make it non-discoverable. If you receive a file via MMS be sure you know what the file contains before you open it. Orange recommends the F Secure Mobile anti-virus product, soon to be available from Orange world and the Orange website, as well as pre-installed on future devices.
Q: What should a customer do if they receive SPAM?
A: Customers should not call the number in the message as they may be charged a premium rate.
Receipt of Unsolicited Messages is not typically charged for when in the UK . However, customers may be charged for receiving these messages by our partner networks overseas when roaming in the same way they are charged for receiving voice calls. If in doubt your should contact Customer Services
Q: What can I do to prevent receiving SPAM messages?
A: Messages sent to our customers without their permission are not sent by Orange or by any Orange approved 3rd Parties. Orange cannot currently stop SPAM being sent. Customers can contact ICSTIS (the Independent Committee for the Supervision of Standards of Telephone Information Services) and register on their website to prevent their telephone numbers being used by most marketing companies.
