Just like a virus can infect us, even though we can’t see it, so a computer virus can invisibly infect your computer and cause it damage.

Viruses are programmes designed to replicate themselves in your computer’s drive. They then perform some kind of unwanted task. It could simply be annoying, by creating irritating effects or imagery. However, some viruses destroy data, or even spread to contacts in your address list by email.

There are other, new types of ‘malware’ – the name for harmful computer programmes. These include ‘Trojans’, ‘spyware’ and ‘worms’. You can find out more about these here.
